Sharding & Horizontal Scaling
9 resources — subcategories Sharding & Horizontal Scaling

Apache ShardingSphere
A distributed SQL ecosystem that adds data sharding, read/write splitting, encryption, and other enterprise capabilities on top of MySQL and other databases, deployable as an enhanced JDBC driver or as a standalone proxy.

DBLE
An open source middleware for MySQL sharding from ActionTech: it speaks the MySQL protocol, spreads tables across MySQL nodes, and supports distributed transactions with two-phase commit. Its last release was in November 2023.
MyCat
An open source Java database middleware that shards MySQL across nodes behind a single MySQL-protocol endpoint — the project DBLE was forked from. Its last release, 1.6.76, was in November 2020.

MySQL NDB Cluster
Oracle's official shared-nothing, in-memory distributed storage engine and clustering technology for MySQL — built for very high availability and horizontal scaling, with no single point of failure.

OceanBase
A distributed relational database from Ant Group with a MySQL-compatible mode, built for HTAP workloads at petabyte scale with no single point of failure.
Spider (MariaDB)
A storage engine with built-in sharding for MariaDB Server: it lets tables on different MariaDB instances be handled as if they were on one, using partitions mapped to remote backends.

TiDB
An open-source, distributed SQL database with MySQL wire-protocol compatibility, built for horizontal scalability, strong consistency, and hybrid transactional/analytical (HTAP) workloads.
Vitess
A database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL, born at YouTube and now a CNCF project.
WeScale
An open-source MySQL database proxy forked from Vitess — adds transparent read-write splitting, non-blocking declarative DDL, and connection scaling for application developers.
